The main body of my work is represented in the portfolio South Yuba River. This body of work grew out of my "discovery" of a beautiful gorge on Scotsman Creek, a tributary of the South Yuba River. The South Yuba drains 310 square miles of the Sierra's western slope just north of Lake Tahoe. One day, using the riverbed as a trail, I was scrambling up the South Yuba when I noticed a small stream flowing out of a narrow slot in the canyon wall. This slot led to a gorge carved into a band of metamorphosed sea-floor sediments. Scotsman Creek snakes through this ancient sea floor, exposing different-colored layers and creating several waterfalls. In the next three years, I returned to this section of the Yuba and Scotsman Creek hundreds of times to try to capture their spirit on film. The vertical-walled canyons forced me to carry my 45 pounds of four-by-five inch equipment in waterproof cases since swimming was often required. It would be easier to work in 35mm format, but I feel the larger format is unequaled in its ability to capture the rock's subtle details.
The additional Portfolio I chose to display is titled "High County." These images are more traditional Landscape work. Like my river images they are a celebration of the beautiful colors found in nature. Most of these images were taken in the fall, the most colorful time of the year. I especially love the high country of the eastern Sierra during the fall season.
